There's no true speech freedom in class

You think that you have the speech freedom as a citizen; however, the belief are not really carried in class sometimes.

“There are inevitable confrontations, or “flame wars,” that may not be as acceptable or controllable in writing contexts as in the classroom.” Indeed in the classroom, especially in senior high school or junior high school in Taiwan, students are not encouraged to challenge or query others’ discourses. Besides, learners are apt to provide positive feedbacks instead of heckling, so there may be less sparks aroused in the classroom than in cyberspace. Learners taste true essence of speech freedom in cyberspace and not to be afraid of embarrassing somebody else in public since we are “faceless”. The freedom on Internet is entirely different from the freedom in class which is chosen in some aspects and under-controlled.

In the process of debate, “bad words” which are highly restricted in class often show up unexpectedly. Is it bad because learners could be polluted? Of course not. “Bad word” is a part of social life and could not be acquired through traditional courses, which enable learners to express emotion.

On the contrary, learners may be easily shocked by others’ direct responses or offensive discourse. Therefore, students had better well prepare psychically when they try to publish personal discourse online in forums

Learners can socialize themselves through Internet as well no matter in language or other aspects. Internet creates contact zone for us to connect other people around the world.

Why do I text?

“When speakers engage their productive modalities by speaking, they may be pushed to pay attention and change their syntactic output in order to communicate effectively.” In some ways, I’ll agree with Jepson, K. on this argument, but on the other hand, I think that if the speaker doesn’t aim to acquire L2 through negotiation, he/she may not modify his/her output for effective communication. As we learned in class that Kelly met a native speaker in SL and didn’t get the answer to her question about her non-understanding.

“The text chat environment may promote more of a need for repair moves due to breakdowns in communication related to topic incoherence.” Indeed, speakers in text chat switch their topics more easily so that it may cause non-understanding resulted from incoherence. Breakdowns in communication promote speakers to negotiate so as to comprehend the content. In order to catch up the speed of communication in text chat, learners may have no choice but to apply themselves to the English environment with their metalinguistic knowledge. When they “engage in modified interaction, triggered mainly by lexical confusion, which could facilitate SLA”, learners acquire vocabulary by looking them up or feedbacks.
However, the experiment shows that in text chat learners have much less repair moves than in voice chat. I think one of the reason might be that speakers could easily go back to previous text or search for relative information online at the same time, so they are apt not to negotiate.

The author brought up an idea that “many participants seemed to be bilingual or multilingual and belonged to a group of people distinguished by multiple literacies.” In my opinion, speakers in the same group ultimately would be from similar literacies because there may be fewer breakdowns, disagreements or conflicts in communication. As the saying goes “birds of a feather flock together”, it is hard for speakers to continue their conversations once there are too many unresolved discrepancies.

“Self-correction is largely dependent on the social context” and in some context, “learners may not see the need for accuracy or may perceive self-correction as face threatening.” Most of the cases I learned shows that native speakers tend not to correct themselves if errors don’t interfere with understanding. On the other hand, most speakers who self correct errors, in order not to confuse interlocutors, know their interlocutors’ non-native backgrounds. And in my experiences, I take self-correction as a kind of self awareness instead of face threatening.

How does "faceless" work on you?

In text-based online facilities such as text-chat rooms where most of us have ever been, it’s not easy for learners to adhere to the same topic and follow the turns like face-to-face learners do. Because each of the participants could send messages at the same time, learners need to respond more quickly so as to catch up the pace; however, when the conversational text goes to fast, there will be different responses from learners. Some might feel stressful and lose confidence but others might take it as a chance or challenge to force themselves to speed up. In my opinion, text-based online facilities are an safe and comfortable environment because we are faceless; therefore, there‘s no need to worry much about my own mistakes which would embarrass me. What’s more, in text-base environment, I can correct my own errors before sending them out, so it will kind of ensure me from losing confidence. I could feel more comfortable to ask question in public as well.

It is more convenient to approve English through internet-based facilities no matter in text chat or voice chat because of its accessibility and convenience. In the process, learners are in charge of their own learning instead of sitting and listening in regular class. When it comes to Moo like Second life which is one of the era-crossing innovations in language education and provides users another state of visual stimulation, I believe that most of us would choose Moo as the medium to converse with other language learners when it compared with tandems. It enables users to proceed with more real role play and at the same time, participants converse as if they are face to face because of the contact of avatars.

However, speakers and interlocutors do not always respond to each other as they think, so sometimes how repair moves work in negotiation depends on interlocutors. Take Kelly's experience for example which she shared in class, when she didn't understand what the interlocutor talked about, she asked for explanation but somehow the interlocutor didn't answer her directly, instead, he just said it was a joke. In the same setting, even none of the other participants answered her. I guess, for some native speakers, having a conversation with somebody else is for fun rather than learning a language so that they somehow lack a kind of motivation to keep it rolling.

On the contrary, while I was talking to a French guy, he often expressed his ideas as clearly as possible so as not to confuse me and he even corrected his typing errors before I got confused. Native speakers who don’t intent to practice language with learners or have no idea about their interlocutors seem to predominate the conversation most of the time; hence, if they don’t pass the ball back, it would reduce opportunities to negotiate meanings.

SEX seems naked

The picture is the one I promised to post on my blog to share with everyone. The first kiss in SL. WOW
Last night, while I was in SL, I went to a place named “FREE SEX EMPIRE” and it was really amazing because that was my first time to see what virtual sex is. I took a photo and the one was shot found out and looked at me. :P

Then I met another person who was also from Frence but I didn’t really feel comfortable to talk with him. I tried to guide our conversation into an more intellectual way instead of only talking about sex all the way. Here mamy people accosted me in order to have sex, I guessed. A guy even left me immediately without saying anything when I didn’t respond his request of doing something together. May it’s the time for European guys in SL because I often met Europeans at 6:00 pm. to 10 pm.

I found out that native speakers didn’t really care about wrong spelling or typing; however, if the interlocutor knew you were a non-native speaker, he or she would have self-corrections in order not to cause non-understanding.

Sometimes people may come to SL for the language purpose. I am the evidence. In addition, I met a guy who spoke Spanish to me even though his Spanish was not very well. Or maybe he thought I am a spanish speaker, so it would be easier to accost people by speaking the same language.

People come to SL for different reasons but one of the main motive is about “sex”. "Sex" seems naked in SL because you don't have to hide it. Most of the men I met told me they came for girls or sex. Second life is indeed a good place for people to explore what you won’t do or not easy to do in real life. Maybe some people would think in SL we are not who we are and that is not the real self, just a virtual world. However, in SL, many people express their deep feelings instead of hiding their ture thought because of worring to offend others. They show their desires for sex and their subconsciousness. Therefore, in some way, I will say that people are "true" in SL.

In the online meeting, we chated with each other on purpose instead of chit chatting. As usual, everyone greeted each other as opening. Almost in every chat, I used greeting as opening to continue my comversation. However, when I met my close friends such as Wienie, I won’t greet her at the beginning; instead, I hit the point.

When we talked, almost everyone would use emoticons. We didn’t have difficulties in understanding each other at some times; however, once a interlocutor didn’t understand what I want to express with the emoticon “ XD” which I used a lot when I chated with my friends. The reason might be the background difference. Because my friends and I have the same cultural context about emoticons, so we understand each other without difficulties. Instead, P and I are from different countries and therefore we couldn’t comprehend what the other side meant.

Through the process of negotiation, we use lots of overt of agreement, overt of disagreement,repetetion, clarification, which play important roles in continueing and furthering the conversation. Asking questions is one of the key ways to continue the conversation for me actually.

First try!

Wednesday morning we went on SL to go through an online meeting instead of having a class in the so-called classroom. First of all, I haddifficulties in moving because I had no idea how to move in SL; however, people seemed not to respond to my question. Maybe there were too many people chatting there or they didn’t get what I asked, maybe……QQ. In freebie island, I met H who was a freebie from germany and I instructed him how to go to other places but he didn’t really understand what I talked about. Perhaps because there was something wrong with my instruction (not clear and simple enough) or his English ability was not as high as I thought, he couldn’t immediately understand what I was trying to tell him.
Most of the time he responded “nice” to me, I thought maybe it was one of the clues to his English ability. He didn’t have enough English vocabulary or didn’t have much idea about pragmatics which meant he was not good at social talks in English. What’s more, his sentences were not grammatically correct.

Several minutes later, he asked somebody else how to get to other places and left me behind even though I was still talking to him. At that moment, I felt he didn’t know what the hell etiquette is. A conversation without closing irritated me.

Turn into the body

Wednesday night, in order to get more free outfits such as gowns, I went to Alady Island but there were only a few people over there and it seems that I couldn’t get free stuffs in Alady Island. Actually, I felt kind of embarrassed because as a newbie, my outfit, hair and accessories looked unlovely. :( People I met in other places always wear gorgeous outfits which were suitable for the setting.






I searched “dance” on the bar and then chose to go to “Sweethearts Jazz Greeter”. There people were dressing nicely except me; therefore, I tried many times to accost people for asking where I can get free outfits besides to Freebie Heaven.

At first, I got sort of shocked because some people didn’t really talk to u and I was afraid if I would say something wrong to offend others, I would deliberate before I said it. Somehow I still got hurt at first for being ignored and left. Fortunately, I thought of Emma’s caution in class that we might have cultural shocks in SL so I didn’t give up to accost people. That was my first experience in exploring SL. Later I met a woman, Cherry, she guided me to the board where I could get free and gorgeous gowns, hairs and accessories. By the way, she also sent me many landmarks. When I was asking questions in public, a man who heard I needed free outfits gave much stuff to me for free even though I was not talking to him. How nice!




New ME








Then something interesting happened. I accosted a man who was dressed differently from other people in Sweethearts Jazz Greeter. Almost everyone was dressed up but he wore the worn outfit like a teenager. Indeed I appreciated his outfits. When I asked why he was dressed differently from others, he responded “I’m too poor to have something better”. I said “I am poor too”. Then he gave me 1000 dollars. WOW
He also told me I need to work on my shape hard and gave me some advices about which parts to promote. During the long chat, he told me lots of things and took me to explore other places. The most impressive words about SL he said was “it’s more than a game. Before he left, he gave me another 1000 dollars. How nice the experience was for me!

In the communication, I found out that people use lots of abbreviations and through the process of negotiation, we got more opportunities to practice our target language, maybe sometimes learning the tricks of asking for explanation.

People would often spell words wrongly but they didn’t mind if it would not cause misunderstanding of meaning. Sometime, there were some self-corrections happening. I think one of the reason is that P didn’t want to confuse me because I have been confused about what he talked about once. At that time, he didn’t correct his spelling but just instruct me in another way.

In the negotiation sequence, we request, check comfirmation, indicate our understanging, agreement or nonagreement. Through the process, we somehow learn the way to communicate with and undestand each other. I use many emoticons and the man I talked to show his humor which made the atmosphere more relaxed between two stangers like us. We always deleted question or capital marks which would not interfere the understanding of meaning in our conversation.

Annotation:USING DIGITAL STORIES TO IMPROVE LISTENING COMPREHENSION WITH SPANISH YOUNG LEARNERS OF ENGLISH

I 100% agree with the perspective that “stories can offer a valuable way of contextualizing and introducing new language, making it meaningful and memorable”. Teaching contents such as grammar, vocabulary and so on could bore students if they are imparted individually in sections like the way what Taiwanese English textbooks are used to being, including vocabulary, grammar and reading. Students will learn how to use the word instead of just remember the spelling of the word. Collocating with pictures could enhance the memory and make it easy to understand. It is more effective to arouse young learners interest by stories with abundant of pictures or even attract anime on the web than on the boring textbook with dead pictures. “This verbal information is commonly complemented with non-verbal information in the form of large pictures, which helps children reconstruct the storyline.” Through the design of interaction with the computer, learners might feel like play games rather than study so it may increase the ratio of exposure to the target language and decrease repulsion of studying English.
Computer-based technology is underutilized not only in the primary classroom but also in the middle school in Taiwan. Therefore, middle school teachers who would like to make use of internet-based teaching in Taiwan might encounter difficulties in non-universality of technology usage. For learners, at the beginning, sometimes it is indeed an uneasy task to deal with sophisticated technology no matter for elementary school students or college students so teachers’ instructions are indispensible to help students overcome tech difficulties.

A blog serves as a channel of communication between blogger and readers (the audio company and the audience here). However, from the posting on Oct.31st, we see a 14-year-old Italian girl, Francesca, wrote down her opinion and then corrected the spelling error herself. Actually, it doesn’t matter for others to understand what the meaning is but she apologized for it. For some non-native speakers like Francesca or us, we pay much attention on correctness of grammar, spelling and so on so once we make a mistake of these; we will care about it much more than native speakers even though it won’t lead to misunderstanding of meaning.

On the contrary, a native speaker, Elina, made an indifferent mistake on her response but she didn’t even care about it because it doesn’t result in misunderstanding.



The entertaining blog serves as not only a channel of communication but also an environment of English learning. Learners acquire English unconsciously through voluntary entertainment as well as recreation.

What’s more, we see how native speakers use text characters as we typing abbreviation like ㄅㄅ(掰掰) even though we don’t have foreign friends who chat with us on MSN.

On the comments, many readers use bad words and emotional expression which are used in the series a lot such as bitch to express their opinions. Many of them also used “all the way”, “ xoxo” and abbreviation for name in their comments like the female characters did in the series. They are obviously influenced and internalize what they heard in the TV series and then perform in their daily lives.

Blog Obsevation--Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl is a recently famous TV series and I believe it will become the next Sex and the City before long. Actually, many audiences have been addicted to it since it popped up. It is about a group of teenagers’ life who study in the same senior high school in New York and the two main female characters, Serena and Blair, are extremely wealthy and beauty. Those complicated relationships, accidents and gossips interweave all of them and make up the whole story. What an interesting point is that the story is entirely told by a blogger who set a blog named “Gossip Girl” spreading daily gossips around the school. Everyone can also provide gossip sources to the blogger and she will update gossips on the blog immediately. Therefore, every student of the senior high school acquires newest information from the blog but no body really knows who she (the blogger) is. She is the voice-over in the series who tell the story out as well and always signs “xoxo gossip girl” at the end of her posting. The real blog which I observe uses the same signature at the end of her postings, too.

When it comes to language learning, there are a variety of ways to provide resources; with the swift development of internet, people could easily get learning resources outside the school by themselves. Nevertheless, if online reading material is undoubtedly a good source and approach should be reconsidered.

As Brandl mentioned, the hyper-liked structure and presentation of information on the internet may easily cause students to get lost. Because of not only students’ low proficiency of a target language but also the lack of ability to sift and organize too much information on the internet, students get lost easily. Activities relating to the target language such as preparing a Japanese meal, arranging a trip to Madrid will stimulate students’ enthusiasm and interest and make them immerse into the culture. Language learning which accompanies cultural learning would be more effective. But the students who are going to complete the activity through Internet should bear the ability to select and integrate much information if the teacher does not assign websites. Teaching and learning promotes each other because the open-ended structure makes the teacher prepare for a wide variety for less predictable answers from students. Students who bear the schemata will learn more effectively and the interaction among the class will be vibrant.
In general, internet-based reading materials provide us numerous opportunities to contact what we need and the text show that most adolescents are good at search and browse websites.
